Resilience is a Dance with Recovery

What does it mean to be resilient to injury and setback during the injury recovery process?

Imagine recovery as a dance, a fluid motion where sometimes we glide forward and at times, we step back. But, like any seasoned dancer, the performance continues, undeterred by the occasional misstep.

It's a common impulse to stop all movement at the slightest twinge of pain, fueled by the thinking that "Pain equals danger! To avoid further injury, I should stop, right?" This instinct is not entirely misplaced when it comes to acute injuries and initial tissue damage. However, in the realm of chronic pain, where complexities are aplenty, tissue healing occurs as well as it can be within the first 3-6 months, sometimes even sooner. (1)

With this understanding, our perception of pain, particularly chronic pain, warrants a deeper investigation. Often, it's not just the physical injury but other factors—persistent focus on the discomfort, stress from various life domains, inadequate rest, and our reactions to pain—that can amplify our suffering.

Embracing a comprehensive and holistic approach to pain management is crucial. It's about becoming informed and confident in your body's ability to move and heal. Alongside consulting healthcare professionals, take time to explore other contributing factors to your pain. Continue your dance through life, dipping and swaying with resilience along the way. Keep in mind, every step, forward or back, is part of your journey to recovery.
